If there is one experience that outdoor enthusiasts and the adventure spirited should add to their bucket list, then it should be enjoying a few days on a houseboat, anywhere. Cruising, lazing, swimming and sleeping are just a few of the laid back activities or non-activities that you will experience while gently cruising along.

It is a unique and alternative accommodation experience ideal for couples, families and groups of friends. Leaving land behind gives one the feeling of escaping from the daily stress which is just one of the appealing features of the houseboating experience. You can move around as and when your want, follow your own itinerary and watch the sun as it moves across the landscape towards a typical African sunset that you will get to enjoy from a unique vantage point, floating down river or being moored and totally relaxed.

Houseboating on the Vaal River has steadily grown since 2003 with a few operators offering this extraordinary getaway experience. Accommodation ranges from very self-catering options, to luxury skippered on-board catering by a personal chef. All amenities such as comfortable sleeping accommodation, a fully equipped galley (kitchen), bathrooms, living spaces and decks for braaiing, sunbathing and bird-watching are on-board.

LIQUID LIVING is the first luxury houseboat of its kind to grace the Vaal River and comes fully laden with home style necessities and friendly staff to attend to your every whim. Renting a Houseboat is similar as staying in a deluxe hotel suite…..floating on water. The houseboat comes equipped with everything you need for a memorable getaway. The Vaal River offers beautiful sunset views, starry skies and “House Spotting Areas”.

Liquid Living offers luxury accommodation for 8 to 10 guests with en-suite facilities, a personal chef and skipper. Two permanently moored houseboats are also available to rent. A perfect weekend getaway for a family of 4. Although they don’t cruise, they have the best riverfront view and you will be able to enjoy the constant feel of being on water. There are two cabins en-suite, open plan kitchen and lounge area inter-leading onto a massive deck with dining table and braai facility. Full DSTV bouquet. They are moored at the Emerald Resort & Casino Marina and guests are welcome to use the Resort & Casino facilities.

Waking up in the morning on one of these houseboat is an awesome experience.

Every season of the year is different, bringing with it constantly changing riverscapes. Summer is very popular and the peak season for houseboat hiring, especially over weekends and holidays.  During the week it is less busy and the weather in summer is generally excellent and very hot on the Highveld.

Autumn brings the transformation of the landscapes colours, with trees starting to turn shades of yellow, orange, brown and red. The days are still warm with cooler mornings and evenings, but still ideal for houseboating, skiing and swimming.

Winter is such a special time of the year on the river and the mindset that it is not ideal for houseboating is just not true. The crisp early mornings and chilly evenings are very specials times, as it is very quiet on the river and every sound and movement in the water can be heard. Between 10am and 3pm is normally pleasant enough to sit outside and enjoy the warm sun. Just imagine being wrapped in a thick scarf, blanket, gloves and a warm hat drinking a cup of hot soup or hot chocolate watching the birds and enjoying the tranquility.

Spring is such a beautiful time of the year with fresh new colours popping all over. Days are getting warmer and the slumber that some of us were caught in can no be shaken off, especially when experiencing the freshness of the season from a totally different perspective, by staying on a houseboat or slowly cruising down the Vaal River.
