Henley on Klip is a beautiful little village between Alberton and Vereeniging that has maintained its quaintness and is situated on the Klip River which flows into the Vaal River. The village carries with it, a wealth of history, beautiful guest houses, bistro's, tea gardens, wedding and function venues. The well-known Bass Lake Adventure Resort is situated just outside the village.
Every two years this little village turns out in full force for the Henley on Klip Mardi Gras, and this year it will happen on the 25th May. The whole village gets involved in this family fun day and also encourages local residents in the surrounding towns, tourists and visitors to set this day aside for what promises to be a day of fun, laughter, events and entertainment from start to finish.
For weeks now, Committee Members have been hard at work, planning, making posters, decorating the street name poles, giving interviews on local radio station and media partner, 90.6, finalising about 120 craft stalls and food vendors, some that will have food available from about eight different countries, plus traditional South African food and many volunteering to be involved on the day.
Traditionally, a parade around Fraser Park with happy villagers in their Mardi Gras costumes, which this year will be about hats, hair and headdresses, will take place after the official opening starting at 10am. Also included in the parade will be a collection of classic cars, children and horses.
Rotary Club Meyerton/Henley on Klip will offer a Gin Bar and the Lions will be involved in a book table and run the Bar. Craft Beer will also be on sale. The Children's Tent will be keeping the little ones busy while their parents enjoy the celebrations.
Some of the entertainment offered on the day includes, belly dancers, a marimba band, (from the prestigious OWLAG school), wine and art auction, performances by The OWLAG Dance Company, the Kwik Pix photo booth, solo artists, an equestrian display. A traditional six-a-side Cricket tournament takes place with young and old alike joining in the fun.
The ever-popular Henley Air helicopter flips are always great fun, and very well supported, so tickets should be purchased early.
